A Study on the Variations in the Formation of the Trunks of Brachial Plexus International Journal of Morphology

Brachial plexus shows several variations in its formation and branching pattern. Variations in the formation of the trunks are very rare. We studied 44 dissected specimens specifically for variations in the formation of the trunks of the brachial plexus. 5 cadavers (11.3%) showed variations in the formation of the trunks. All the variations were unilateral. In one cadaver (2.27%), the middle trunk was formed by union of C7 and C8 roots and lower trunk was formed by T1 root. Upper and middle trunks were fused with each other in one specimen (2.27%). In 3 specimen (6.81%), the C5 root pierced scalenus anterior before joining C6 to form the upper trunk. Knowledge of its variations is of importance to orthopedic surgeons, neurologists and anesthesiologists.

Absence of Musculocutaneous Nerve Associated with Variations of Distribution Patterns of the Median Nerve International Journal of Morphology

Variations in the brachial plexus and the distribution patterns of its branches are not uncommon. A communicating branch, which is the most frequent variation, often arises from musculocutaneous nerve to median nerve. However, the branches arising from lateral cord of the brachial plexus and median nerve instead of musculocutaneous nerve are very rare. Detailed description of the abnormalities is important for surgical procedures. Our case study reports the musculocutaneous nerve was absent, a branch from the medial cord innervated the coracobrachialis muscle and two branches from the median nerve innervated the biceps and brachialis muscles, respectively. Anomalous Branching Pattern of Lateral Cord of Brachial Plexus International Journal of Morphology

During routine dissection, an unusual formation of median nerve was detected in the right upper limb of a 55 year old male cadaver. The median nerve had an additional contribution from lateral cord. The two branches of the lateral cord designated as upper and the lower branches were observed at different levels. The upper branch was in close contact with the third part of the axillary artery and it crossed the vessel anteriorly to unite with a branch of the medial cord to form the median nerve. Connection between Radial and Ulnar Nerves at Humeral Level And Its Clinical Significance: A Cadaveric Case Report International Journal of Morphology

Variations of the terminal branches of the brachial plexus in the upper limb are abundant and frequently have been reported. But connection between its radial and ulnar nerves at humeral level is very rare. During routine dissection of the right arm of a 75-year-old male cadaver in the Department of Anatomy of Birjand University of Medical Sciences (BUMS), in Iran, we observed a connection between radial and ulnar nerves, and from the literature reviewed, we found only two cases that had been reported previously, one of them was unilateral and the other bilateral. Awareness of such variations are very important for surgeons and diminish the possible complication of regional anesthesia and surgical procedures, hence, we decided to report it.

Brachial plexus neuropathies are common complaints among patients seen at orthopedic clinics. The causes range from traumatic to occupational factors and symptoms include paresthesia, paresis, and functional disability of the upper limb. Treatment can be surgical or conservative, but detailed knowledge of the brachial plexus is required in both cases to avoid iatrogenic injuries and to facilitate anesthetic block, preventing possible vascular punctures. Multiple Variations of the Branches of the Brachial Plexus with Bilateral Connections between Ulnar and Radial Nerves International Journal of Morphology

During routine dissection of the upper limbs of a Caucasian male cadaver, multiple variations of the branches of the brachial plexus were observed. On the left side, the musculocutaneous nerve was absent and the muscles of the anterior compartment of the arm were innervated by the median nerve. The median nerve was also formed from three roots viz; two from the lateral and one from the medial cord of the brachial plexus. On the right side, the musculocutaneous nerve contributed a long communicating branch to the median nerve in the distal half of the arm. The Scalenus Accessorious Muscle International Journal of Morphology

Many of the anatomical variations that are inadequately described or quantified are actually more clinically and surgically significant than being just anatomical curiosities. We report about such a variation where an aberrant slip existed in the scalene group, in a 56 year old embalmed female cadáver. This kind of variation may affect the size of the scalene triangle, and thus, may potentially result in varied signs and symptoms in patients vulnerable to thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). Proximity of the scalene muscles to the brachial plexus, subclavian artery and vein, coexisting with aberrant slips or bundles may also predispose to compression syndromes.

Third Head of Biceps Brachii Muscle, Associated with Musculocutaneous and Median Nerve Bilateral Communication and with a Communicating Branch Between Median Nerve Roots International Journal of Morphology

Both biceps brachii muscle anatomical variations and the presence of communicating branches between the musculocutaneous nerve and the median nerve are common, and have clinical significance due to their connections and vulnerability. A case found during a routine dissection of the upper limb of a male cadaver is described, in which unilateral presence of a third head of the biceps brachii muscle coexists associated to a bilateral communication of the musculocutaneous nerve with the median nerve, and a unilateral communicating branch between the roots of median nerve. The morphological features and the prevalence of the case are presented, besides the discussion of its clinical significance.
